Spanish Gypsy flamenco legend Manuel Agujetas, is an outstanding, controversial singer - anarchic and unpredictable. Born Manuel de los Santos Pastor in Jerez de la Frontera in 1939, Agujetas is one of the most important figures in the history of flamenco. Heir to the Spanish Gypsy tradition of singing blacksmiths, Agujetas worked in his falther's forge until 1970, when he made his first recording. He has achieved international recognition for his singing of the stunningly intense form of flamenco, cante jondo (deep song), which includes flamenco's purest, ancient styles such as martinetes and siguiriyas. He appears in Carlos Saura's film "Flamenco" and in Dominique Abel's documentary "Agujetas, Cantaor".
Agujetas will be joined by dancer Kanako and the superb young Gypsy guitarist Manuel Valencia of Jerez de la Frontera, a student of both maestro Manuel Morao and Gerardo Núñez and the nephew of Terremoto, from whom he learned to accompany the cante.

Documental que le hicieron a Manuel en el 98, llamado Agujetas, cantaor, gracias a este documental se conocen muchos aspectos de este gran cantaor. Para mí es el mejor y punto.

Manuel de los Santos Pastor, also known as Agujetas (b. Rota, Spain, 1939) is a living legend and one of the most important figures in the history of flamenco. The son of legendary singer El Viejo Agujetas, he worked in his father's blacksmith forge until he went to Madrid as a teenager to sing in the flamenco nightclubs there. He has recorded over 10 albums and appears in Carlos Saura's film Flamenco and in Dominique Abel's documentary Agujetas, Cantaor. He is the father of singers Dolores Agujetas and Antonio Agujetas.

Rito y Geografía del Cante Flamenco - Diego del Gastor

Arriate, a little town in the Málaga-area Ronda mountains, bears witness to the birth of Diego Flores Amaya, the son of Bárbara and Juan, a cattle dealer. When the boy is four years old, the family originally from Grazalema settles in El Gastor, in the neighboring province of Cádiz. And from that whitewashed town of his childhood and teen years, he would take the stage name Diego del Gastor; he who ‘revolutionized’ flamenco toque from (and for) Morón de la Frontera.

Once the family had settled in Morón, they say the teen Diego used to spend hours playing the guitar. “Later on, his friendship with Pepe Naranjo and Pepe Mesa made Diego develop and reach a very personal style”, as Fernando González-Caballos specifies in the book ‘Guitarras de cal’. It was thus how he made contact with “the school of Moron, which begins with Paco el de Lucena”. And also key was his close relationship with cantaor Joselero, who would become his brother-in-law, besides one of the cantaores his guitar would provide accompaniment for. Then in the fifties, he also made direct contact with Niño Ricardo, when the Sevillian maestro was working at El Guajiro. “Diego felt great admiration for Niño Ricardo’s art and when they ran into each other at Siete Puertas it seemed like a duel of titans: they handed the guitar back and forth to one another, exchanging falsetas”, Sody explains. {more}

14 minuto clip del documental de la polifacética realizadora Dominique Abel: "En nombre del padre" (2000).

Abel decide rodar un documental sobre la transmisión del flamenco de padres a hijos. La cinta recoge así la herencia flamenca del baile, de Manolete Maya a su hija Judea Maya, y del cante, de Jaime Heredia "El Parrón" a su hija Marina Heredia.

This film was made possible through the financial support of NTR television and the Dutch Flamenco Biennial.
Cinematographer and director Martijn van Beenen and Ernestina van de Noort director of the Dutch Flamenco Biennial to travel to Jerez de la Frontera in search of the roots of flamenco. They met three generations of guitarists: Manuel Morao, Moraíto Chico and Diego del Morao. 

The Morao gypsy dynasty has put an indelible mark on the flamenco style from Jerez de la Frontera, one of the most prominent breeding grounds of flamenco. It emerged on the land around Jerez on the large farms where gypsies worked as day labourers. María Bala (76), sister of the great singer Manuel Soto Sordera and one of the last keepers of the old cante jondo, demonstrates how the primitive flamenco singing of the past sounded. With Manuel Morao, Moraíto Chico, Diego del Morao, Jesús Méndez, María Bala, José Mercé, Diego Carrasco y familia, El Bo, Chícharo and many others.
