This episode explores the amazing world of the Spanish Gitanos through the unique story of the influential flamenco dancer Mario Maya and his incredible family. 

The documentary is the last film shot of the world’s most innovative and influential flamenco dancer Mario Maya. Mundi Romani travels to Granada in Andalusia, Spain, to discover the amazing world of the Gitanos (Spanish Roma) through the unique story of the Maya family. The film explores the little known history of flamenco, an art form of the marginalized inspired by centuries of persecution that eventually lead Spanish Roma to lose knowledge of their language. Amidst adversity and exclusion, the Maya story explores genius, perseverance, empowerment and beauty.

Winner Best Visual Coverage Prize 2008 at the 5th Ethnic Minority Film Festival, Central and Eastern Europe.

LUIS "EL ZAMBO"-DIEGO AMAYA-PURO Y JONDO

Luis Fernández Soto "El Zambo" nace en la calle La Sangre de Jerez de la Frontera, el 26 de septiembre de 1.949. Está emparentado con las prestigiosas sagas cantaoras de los Fernández y los Soto, desde Paco La Luz y Tío Juanichi El Manijero hasta Enrique Soto y Fernando Terremoto, pasando por Tío Borrico, El Sordera, Terremoto, El Serna. Se va curtiendo en la fiestas familiares, tanto en las de su casa como en las que se formaban en su barrio al regreso de los trabajadores de las faenas del campo y de las fraguas. Luis reconoce estar influenciados, como no podía ser de otra manera, por las formas de decir el cante de El Gloria, Las Pompi, Tomás Pavón, La Niña de los Peines, Tío Borrico, El Sordera, Terremoto, Chocolate y El Serna, entre otros que continuaron marcando las rutas del cante jondo. ~~ Luis Fernandez Soto  "El Zambo" was born on the streets 'the blood' of Jerez de la Frontera, September 26, 1949. He is related to the prestigious singing dynasties of Fernandez and Soto, from Paco de Luz and Tío Juanichi El Manijero to Enrique Soto and Fernando Terremoto, through Tío Borrico, El Sordera, Terremoto and El Serna. El Zambo learned while tanning and at family parties, both at home and those in his neighborhood were the workers return from work in the fields and forges. Luis acknowledges being influenced, and could it be otherwise, by the singing of El Gloria, Las Pompi, Tomás Pavón, La Niña de los Peines, Tío Borrico, El Sordera, Terremoto, Chocolate y El Serna, as others continued to mark the routes of cante jondo.

MORENTE the film - Trailer with English subtitles

Enrique Morente Cotelo, known as Enrique Morente was born in Granada in 1942, and was a choirboy in Granada cathedral. When he was 18 years old, he moved to Madrid, where he was known as Enrique el Granaíno. In 1986 he created the “Fantasía del cante jondo para flamenco y orquesta” (Jondo flamenco music Fantasy for flamenco and orchestra) along with Antonio Robledo at the Royal Theatre of Madrid. He constantly looked for common ground between different folklores and traditions. He created a dark and poetic vision of the Alhambra with his record “Morente sueña la Alhambra” (Morente Dreams of the Alhambra) (2005), with Tomatito, his daughter Estrella Morente and Juan Habichuela, among others. Flamencologist Balbino Gutiérrez published his biography in 1996. He died on 13 December 2010.
