Enrique Morente Cotelo, known as Enrique Morente was born in Granada in 1942, and was a choirboy in Granada cathedral. When he was 18 years old, he moved to Madrid, where he was known as Enrique el Granaíno. In 1986 he created the “Fantasía del cante jondo para flamenco y orquesta” (Jondo flamenco music Fantasy for flamenco and orchestra) along with Antonio Robledo at the Royal Theatre of Madrid. He constantly looked for common ground between different folklores and traditions. He created a dark and poetic vision of the Alhambra with his record “Morente sueña la Alhambra” (Morente Dreams of the Alhambra) (2005), with Tomatito, his daughter Estrella Morente and Juan Habichuela, among others. Flamencologist Balbino Gutiérrez published his biography in 1996. He died on 13 December 2010.

Maka and Jose Ibañez, known artistically as Makarines has just come out with their fourth album “Tierra” with the help of Miguel Poveda productions. These brothers from Seville, whose artistic orientation lies between the road to the Rocío (where there's a major pilgrimage every year in May, and lots of fandangos and sevillanas are sung and danced) and the Triana neighborhood, two sources from which flamenco never ceases to flow, now bring us a recording that aims for innovation without forgetting their flamenco roots.

Bulerias, Solea, Tangos or Alegrías are some of the styles you find on this recording where the two brothers sing in unison completely and where the warmth of their voices is accompanied by a lineup of top musicians like Dani de Moron, Paquito Gonzalez, Antonio Ramos "maka" and Jose Maria Cortina among others.

José Greco, a flamenco dancer and choreographer who became known as the greatest Spanish dancer in the world. - Born in Montorio nei Frentani, Italy, of Spanish-Italian parents, he moved to Seville, Spain, at age 3, then was raised in Brooklyn from age 10. Mr. Greco began his career in 1937. In 1941, the already famous Argentine-born dancer La Argentinita saw him dance and asked him to be her partner. In 1951, Mr. Greco shared with Carol Channing the title of New Broadway Personality of the Year. The Jose Greco Dance Company, which integrated flamenco and ballet, toured worldwide. Mr. Greco retired from dance in the 1960's.

En la película-documental canta unos martinetes, grabados en su casa martillo en mano, que en el disco-complemento (de seis cortes) se extiende hasta los 17 minutos. El resto de los cantes se registraron en una venta de Chipiona sacando su salvaje imprevisible, desencajado, junto a Moraíto.

Agujetas: flamenco en vinagre. Bien conservado y malencarado. Es un cantaor de máximas flamencas, duras como su martinete neanderthal. Una de cal brillante: "Me levanto con dolor de cabeza porque todas las noches sueño el cante". Otra de arena tabicada: "Una persona que sepa leer y escribir no puede cantar flamenco, porque pierde la buena pronunciación".

He was born in San Fernando, Cádiz, Spain. His mother was Juana Cruz Castro, a basket weaver ("La Canastera"), whose gift of singing was a strong early influence. His father, Juan Luis Monje, was also a singer as well as a blacksmith, and had a forge where Camarón worked as a boy. His uncle José nicknamed him Camarón (Spanish for "Shrimp") because he was blonde and fair skinned. At the age of eight he began to sing at inns and bus stops with Rancapino to earn money. At sixteen, he won first prize at the Festival del Cante Jondo in Mairena de Alcor. Camarón then went to Madrid with Miguel de los Reyes and in 1968 became a resident artist at the Tablao Torres Bermejas where he remained for twelve years.

There he met Paco de Lucía with whom he recorded nine albums between 1969 and 1977. The two toured extensively together during this period. As Paco de Lucía became more occupied with solo concert commitments, Camarón worked with one of Paco's students, Tomatito.

In 1976, at the age of 25, Camarón married Dolores Montoya, a Romani girl from La Línea de la Concepción whom he nicknamed "La Chispa" (The Spark). At the time La Chispa was only 16. The couple had four children.

Many consider Camarón to be the single most popular and influential flamenco cantaor (singer) of the modern period. Although his work was criticized by some traditionalists, he was one of the first to feature an electric bass in his songs. This was a turning point in the history of Flamenco music that helped distinguish Nuevo Flamenco.

In later years, his health deteriorated due to heavy smoking and drug abuse. In 1992, José Monge Crúz died of lung cancer in Badalona, Spain. It was estimated that more than 100,000 people attended his funeral.

La Gran Fernanda en otro de los palos donde ejerce su magisterio curtido en las numerosas noches de juergas junto a la guitarra amada de Diego el del Gastor. -- La Fernanda de Utrera had a special voice that was full of a gravelly emotion similar to that found in the old blues singers like Billie Holliday or Bessie Smith. La Fernanda had this special quality and in her later years her voice was a struggling pain filled cry but which contained a soulful tone that came straight from the blood in her veins.

She was born in Utrera, Seville, in 1923, four years previous to her sister, La Bernarda, who was to become her constant companion and singing partner. It was said during the 1960s and ‘70s that wherever you saw La Fernanda, her sister would not be far behind. They were to become two of the most respected female singers in the history of flamenco, performing at festivals and juergas together all over Spain. La Fernanda and La Bernarda belong to the Peña family, they are the grand daughters of El Pinini, who was as famous for his cantiñas as he was for his drunkenness. The Peña family is one of the biggest and most influential flamenco families, a tribe who’s roots spread from Utrera across to Lebrija and consist of names like El Perrate, Pedro Bacán, El Lebrijano and Miguel El Funi, to name only a few.

Extremadura family, was born on May 1, 1962 in the Triana district of Seville. Remedios started singing as a child in the tablaos of Seville. And as a young child was presented as a flamenco rock star by producers, never renouncing her roots. The singer is known as the Camarona de Triana, as it was said by muses of Camarón that Remedios was one of the artists who inspired the maestro de La Isla.

De familia extremeña, nació el 1 de mayo de 1962 en el barrio de Triana de Sevilla. Remedios Amaya comenzó a cantar siendo una niña en los tablaos de Sevilla. Y aunque en sus inicios fue presentada como estrella del flamenco rock por sus productores, nunca renunció a la ortodoxia. La cantaora es conocida como La Camarona de Triana, pues fue comadre y musa de Camarón y, según se dice, una de las artistas que más inspiró al maestro de La Isla.

Juan Peña Fernández, also known as Juan Peña "El Lebrijano" or simply El Lebrijano (born 1941) is a Spanish Gitano (Roma) musician, the nephew of Perrate de Utrera. Born at Lebrija, province of Seville, he began to play Spanish guitar as a child, accompanying dancers like La Paquera de Jerez, but eventually turned to Flamenco singing. In 1964, he won the championship at the Competition of Mairena del Alcor, one of the most important Flamenco music festivals. A few years later, in 1970, he started his collaboration with famous guitarist Paco de Lucía. His most recent musical works include Andalusi influences, with albums such as Casablanca, Open Doors and Encuentros. In 1997 the Spanish Ministry of Culture awarded him the Medalla de Oro al Trabajo.

When I saw him I was really impressed with his playing. He asked me, "Aren't you going to play like your father?". I just played a little, practically nothing. So I said, "I don't know. I'm studying." So he showed me a falseta and I was hooked. I told my father that I wanted to play and I stayed in Madrid and I stayed at a boarding house where he stayed and I started to study. Since the release of its first album back in 1991, Taraf de Haïdouks has been considered the epitome of Romany music's vitality. The group has toured worldwide, released acclaimed albums and a DVD (see below), and counts among its fans the late Yehudi Menuhin, the Kronos Quartet (with whom it has recorded and performed), actor Johnny Depp (alongside whom the group appeared in the film The Man Who Cried), fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto (who invited the band to be models-cum-musicians for hisParis and Tokyo shows), and many more. Meanwhile, the band members seem to have been relatively unaffected by all this, maintaining their way of life (they still reside in Clejani, in the Valachian countryside).

The band's latest release is the Maskarada album, in which they reinterpret and "re-gypsify" pieces by 20th-century classical composers (such as Bartok, Khachaturian and others) who drew inspiration from national folklore and often borrowed from Roma styles.

But flamenco started life as the lament of an oppressed people who left India centuries ago before some settled in Spain -- the gypsies. Today their inspiration comes from the Seville ghetto. It's so run down the state no longer collects rent. The police barely patrol here -- outsiders enter only with permission. Gypsy dons Ramon and Jose are in charge, a pair who have made their fortune from flamenco. Today they foster new talent. Many of their songs recall centuries of racist abuse, where speaking their language could mean your tongue was ripped out. 'We had to express ourselves in this way' says Ramon. 'With flamenco we sing our sadness, our joys and all our feelings'. Flamenco's power is deep within -- a force called duende -- the spirit -- that can be moved by great sadness or joy. For the ghetto youth, life's harshness has given them great emotion to draw on.

Composer and concert guitarist, Manolo Sanlúcar was born in the picturesque town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda in Cadiz, Andalucia, on 21 November 1943. His ability to innovate and his continuous search for new possibilities have led him to compose works that have a strong personal emphasis, which is always related to what he calls learned music, but without losing its Andalusian flavour. In fact, he was the first artist who brought flamenco to the Teatro Real in Madrid. His real name is Manuel Moreno Junquera, and he was born in 1955. He is the nephew of the original Moraíto (Manuel Moreno a.k.a. Manuel Morao), and son of the original Moraíto Chico (Juan Moreno).

''Cante'' is the vocal expression of flamenco, sung by men and women, preferably seated, with no backing singers. The gamut of feelings and states of mind -- grief, joy, tragedy, rejoicing and fear -- can be expressed through sincere, expressive lyrics characterized by brevity and simplicity. Flamenco ''baile'' is a dance of passion, courtship, expressing a wide range of situations ranging from sadness to joy. The technique is complex, differing depending on whether the performer is male (heavier use of the feet) or female (gentler, more sensual movements). ''Toque'' or the art of guitar playing has long surpassed its original role as accompaniment. Other instruments, including castanets, hand-clapping and foot-stamping are also employed. Flamenco is performed during religious festivals, rituals, church ceremonies and at private celebrations. Luis Torres Cádiz nació en La Puebla de Cazalla (Sevilla) en 1910 y murió en Morón de la Frontera (Sevilla) en 1985. Gitano, perteneciente a una familia donde se cantaba, aunque en ella no hubiera profesionales. Su matrimonio con Amparo Amaya Flores, hermana de Diego el del Gastor, fue providencial, porque los dos hombres permanecieron muy unidos el resto de sus días: Diego acompañaba con su guitarra el cante de Joselero, y los dos formaban una pareja que se complementaba a la perfección. Joselero se movió fundamentalmente en las reuniones de aficionados.

Juana García Gómez, bailaora, más conocida en el mundo artístico del baile flamenco con el nombre de "Juana Amaya", nació en Morón de la Frontera (Sevilla), en el año de 1968. Nieta de Francisca Amaya Amaya, sobrina de la madre de Paco del Gastor, es discípula de Pepe Ríos e hizo pareja con su primo Ramón Barrull, con quien consiguió el premio por Bulerías de su ciudad natal en 1981. Al año siguiente interviene en la II Bienal de Sevilla, en el programa "El nuevo compás", y dos años después figura como primera bailarina en la compañía de Mario Maya, con quien hizo pareja en ¡Ay jondo! y El Amargo (1984). Hacia 1986 trabaja en el tablao Los Gallos, y dos años más tarde viaja por Europa con el concertista cordobés Paco Peña, compaginando estas giras con su presencia en los festivales flamencos andaluces. Tras su estancia en Madrid, donde entre 1989 y 1994 participa en la Cumbre Flamenca, en el espectáculo Estrellas de la Bienal (1991) y en un montaje junto a Joaquín Cortés y Antonio Canales (1993), regresa a Sevilla para impartir clases y montar compañía propia, a la que presentó en 1994 en el Teatro Trianón, de París, en el Festival Mont de Marsán. En 1996 es reclamada por Salvador Távora para protagonizar el papel de Carmen. Trabajó en Un gitano de ley de José Heredia Maya (1997) y en Fuerza Latina, de Antonio Canales (1999). En 2002 presentó en la Bienal el espectáculo Yo misma, con la cantaora Juana la del Revuelo. Es una de las bailaoras con más fuerza y carisma del presente del flamenco.

Algunos críticos y aficionados han comentado en más de una vez que El Chozas ha forjado sus cantes con los aires guajiros de Cuba. Rodríguez Cosano comenta "Que escuchando atentamente los romances de El Puerto de Santa María, podremos comprobar que en tales cantes se forjaron innumerables palos flamencos... Se puede afirmar que la procedencia de sus cantes, en su línea melódica es variada. En primer lugar, las soleares, que nos recuerda, en parte, los romances de El Puerto, determinados cantes de Triana y algo de Juaniquí; todo ello adobado con ingredientes propios; en segundo lugar las bulerías. En este cante, hay reminiscencias de ciertos tonos de Jerez y avivando el ritmo, en muchos momentos, de sus particulares soleares. De todas formas, todo ello está hecho a su manera y, ahí, radica su originalidad ya que El Chozas forjó sus propios cantes a través de viejas melodías y de la improvisación como fuente de su propia creatividad".

Los guitarristas tuvieron serios problemas a la hora de seguirlo por los vericuetos que provocaba el estar acostumbrado a cantar sin guitarra y sobre todo sus improvisaciones. Fue una vez más, Pedro Peña, miembro de la escuela de Diego del Gastor, quien supo recoger como nadie las caídas descendentes de los alargados tercios de las musicales soleares de El Chozas.

Seguimos con los monumentos al cante, con permiso de Gaspar de Utrera se puede cantar mejor por tientos. Esto ocurría en los festivales a finales de los años 60´s y en la década de los 70´s. Por supuesto que tuvo mucho que ver la guitarra gitana y pura del Gran Diego del Gastor que con su toque enduendaba al cantaor y lo exprimía al máximo dando todo lo que llevaba adentro. Otro de los artistas que nos hacían vibrar pese a algunos altibajos. Aunque la intención de título del libro no iba por estos derroteros jondos, aquí hay que decir que -Los payos también cantan Flamenco- Gitanito yo no, me he criaito entre ellos y me tira la inclinación. Rocío Molina was born in Málaga in 1984. She started dancing as early as age three, when she began her professional training, completing her career in 2002 at the Real Conservatorio de Danza de Madrid, graduating with full marks. In 2001 she joined María Pagés’s company, choreographing one of the numbers in the production titled “Las Cuatro Estaciones” (The Four Seasons), touring throughout Italy, Japan, Canada and The United States, where she took part in the Andalusian Gala at the New York City Center. In 2003 she again took part in the USA Flamenco Festival, performing as a soloist, together with Manuela Carrasco and Chocolate, and forming a duo with Israel Galván.

It’s been some time now since Rocío Molina began the transformation from dancer to author, and stopped being a body mover at the service of a work. He perfected his training in Seville with Javier Latorre, Antonio Canales, and Javier Barón. In 2001 he joined Sara Baras’s Company in the show "Juana la Loca"(Crazy Juana). Also that year he participated in the production "Amargo" Rafael Amargo’s Company. Since 2002 he formed part of the cast of dancers from Rafaela Carrasco’s company, with whom he premiered works such as "Una mirada del flamenco” (A look at flamenco). He also participated in repeatedly and as a soloist in "Poet in New York" from the Rafael Amargo company. In 2003 he began his solo projects. He founded the ESS3 Movement Dance Company with Olga Pericet, Daniel Doña and Manuel Linan. This dancer from Granada also premiered in August 2005 in the production "Two’s Company." He also continues to collaborate with other companies, as in the case of "gestures of a woman" by Mercedes Ruiz.

Tomatito became a flamenco sensation at an early age when he was discovered by famed guitarist Paco de Lucía and began working in part with legendary flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla. In 1979, the trio produced a hit called La Leyenda del Tiempo. Their partnership continued until Camarón's death in 1992. A later collaboration included pianist Michel Camilo, producing the albums Spain (2000) and Spain Again (2006). Tomatito's music is a unique mix of traditional flamenco and jazz. On some albums, such as Barrio Negro, he experimented with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Music. He has also worked with flamenco singer Duquende and pianist Chano Domínguez among many others. Tomatito has produced six solo albums. His music for the film Vengo, directed by Tony Gatlif, won the César Award for Best Music Written for a Film in 2001. Four years later, he won a Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Record, for his album Aguadulce.

El Indio Gitano tiene una voz afillá parecida a la de Tío Borrico, que rompe en los estilos extremeños y en soleares, siguiriyas y tonás. De un recital dado en Madrid se editan dos cantes del artista extremeño. En los tientos realiza algunas de las más conocidas variantes gaditanas y jerezanas, para seguir con los tangos, en los que tiene presente a Antonio El Chaqueta (C.D.35). Hizo una larga carrera primero en Badajoz, después en Sevilla y por fin en Madrid. Tenía una voz afillá, flamenquísima y llena de jondura, con la que sus cantes por soleá adquirían a veces una calidad poco frecuente. Su carrera se basó fundamentalmente en el cante para bailar, habiendo trabajado para las más grandes figuras del baile. El Indio Gitano era también un excelente cantaor de alante cuanto estaba inspirado. No siempre ocurría así, pues era un cantaor bastante irregular, pero en sus buenos momentos transmitía como los grandes.

Translation of Pericón by John Moore! The marvelous book 'Mil y una historias de Pericón de Cadiz' will be available in English translation with the next year.

Ever since I was about 17 , I've had a fascination with the cantes de Cádiz and, in particular, with Pericón de Cádiz. It may be because he sang on the original Misa Flamenca - one of the few cante records I was able to find in the Bay Area during the early 70s, and which I committed to memory. Also, his stories, told in Donn Pohren's Lives and Legends of Flamenco, sparkled with gracia – I didn't know it at the time, but this was the famous gracia gaditana. Then, in 1975, I bought a book from a make-shift table outside a flamenco event in Madrid. I didn't realize that the man at the table was José Luis Ortiz Nuevo, but the book was the marvelous 'Mil y una historias de Pericón de Cádiz' ('A thousand and one stories of Pericón de Cádiz').

This book is a collection of Pericón's witty stories recorded and transcribed by Ortiz Nuevo. It takes the reader to the streets of Cádiz during the early 20th century and chronicles the gracia, fiestas, hunger, and terror of a period that spanned the end of Alfonso XIII's reign, the second republic, the civil war, and the Franco dictatorship - all through the eyes of a street-wise flamenco singer. There is history, culture, flamenco history, and lots of gracia - the book is a jewel on many different levels!

The 1975 edition fell out of print for many years, but was re-editied by Barataria Press in 2008, when it won the Deflamenco.com's 'best flamenco book' award.

I've treasured the book for years – re-reading it many times. A few years ago I decided to translate it to English – the stories themselves are fairly straight forward, but there is a wealth of historical and cultural information that most outside Spain (and many in Spain) might not be aware of. Hence, I bolstered the translation with copious footnotes and appendicies, explaining these references, short bios, and a glossary describing flamenco terms and places. In this way, the translation can serve as an introduction to flamenco or an introduction to Cádiz flamenco.

I've spent some time searching for a publisher – this is a bit of a niche book and represents a financial risk. However, Inverted-A Press (inverteda.com) agreed to take on the project, and while in Spain this July, I took the bus from Cádiz to Sevilla to meet with Ortiz Nuevo and sign the translation contract.

The expected release date is sometime in 2012 – the bicentennial of Spain's constitution, which was signed in Cádiz – stay tuned for more information.

Specialists in the field consider the series "Rito y Geografía del Cante" the best series about flamenco ever, and it constitutes an audio-visual document of invaluable worth and significance. It is an exhaustive study concerning artists, styles, geographical and historical contexts that enjoyed the assistance and advisory work of the most prestigious flamencologists of the time.

The complete series is made up of twenty-four volumes, which can be purchased individually or in packs, each of which contains four volumes. Each volume contains four chapters of the original series and, thus, each case or pack contains 16 chapters of the original series.

Pictured: Terremoto de Jerez, The bulería is from Jerez, and follows the Andalusian scale. Fernando Fernández Monje, Terremoto de Jerez (Jerez, Cádiz, 1934-1981), is one of its most outstanding performers.

Ana Blanca Soto, Tía Anica La Piriñaca, (1899 -- 1987). Nació en Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz). La heredera del sobrenombre de su padre, como tantos otros artistas de la comarca, trabaja el campo desde temprana edad, curtiéndose en el hecho flamenco en fiestas y reuniones y aprendiendo de grandes maestros como Frijones y Tío José de Paula, siendo de este último su máximo transmisor, sobre todo en seguiriyas y soleares. Retirada por su marido de cualquier actividad jonda pública, a la muerte de este retoma su carrera artística, primero en las ventas de su localidad y luego tras el inicio de sus grabaciones discográficas en 1.965, actuaría en peñas y festivales sin perder de vistas la fiestas ya que a pesar de su flamenquería, jondura y sus enormes conocimientos, pocas veces traspasaba las líneas comarcales. Una vez más los que buscan en el cante "el tronco negro del faraón" son relegados por el flamenco oficialista a un segundo plano. Afortunadamente dejó registrado sus legados por seguiriyas, soleares, martinetes y bulerías, aunque tocó otros palos esos eran sus indispensables.

Some consider him to be one of the greatest guitar players of all time. I agree!

Paco de Lucía, born Francisco Sánchez Gómez Algeciras, Cádiz on December 21, 1947), is a Spanish virtuoso flamenco guitarist and composer. He is considered by many to be one of the finest guitarists in the world and the greatest guitarist of the flamenco genre. He is noted in particular for his dexterity, technique and strength in his right hand, capable of executing extremely fast passages using just the tips of his fingers.

He is a leading proponent of the Modern Flamenco style, and is one of the very few flamenco guitarists who has also successfully crossed over into other genres of music: he enjoys, and has been successful in, styles such as classical and jazz. He is the winner of the 2004 Prince of Asturias Awards in Arts and 2010 was awarded an honorary doctorate by Berklee College of Music in Boston.

María Dolores "Lola" Flores Ruiz (21 January 1923 – 16 May 1995) was a Spanish singer, dancer, and actress. Flores was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Cadiz (Andalusia, Spain). Although thought to be only part gypsy, she strongly identified with the Spanish gypsy culture. She herself said that there was a very small remote possibility of having gypsy heritage from her grandmother, but was not certain. She became a famous dancer and singer of Andalusian folklore at a very young age, performing flamenco, copla or chotis and featured in films from 1939 to 1987. Her greatest success was in folklore shows with Manolo Caracol, who was her artistic partner.

"Where the unspeakable is song" (Donde lo inexplicable es canción) (Más conocida por los aficionados como la peli del Morao) Documental emitido el 29 de julio de 1.970 en el canal 2 de la británica BBC. Este documental está rodado a caballo entre una finca propiedad de la familia Domecq de Jerez de la Frontera y una taberna de la tacita de plata cuyo sótano dio cobijo a los artistas gaditanos. El filme está dirigido por el director, guionista y productor argentino afincado en Londres Tom Scott Robson, asesorado por Manuel Morao, encargado de reunir al elenco artístico. El programa consta de 55 minutos, la mayoría de ellos, de ARTE.

Intervienen: Manuel Morao, Farruco, Chocolate, Terremoto; La Perla, Aurelio de Cádiz, Dieguito de la Margara, Curro la Gamba; Antonio Mairena, Fernanda de Utrera... Al ser una película nada difundida y a pesar de que la 2 del Canal Sur la programó hace algunos años, nos ha sido imposible conseguir una copia de una generación cercana al original, Todos los que la poseen son copias de copias de copias.. Aún así pensamos que es interesante escucharlo y verlo en estas condiciones. Difusión del Patrimonio D`aquí.

In 1992, Tony Gatlif throws himself into the adventure of Latcho Drom, a hymn to the music of Sinti and Roma. With a small team, he sets out on the trail of the Sinti and Roma, on a musical journey that takes him over an entire year of Rajasthan to Andalusia, via Egypt, Romania, Hungary and France. (Editor's Note: Amazingly, this documentary has no narration. Gatlif's genius lets the music and imagery speak for themselves.) In 1997, he describes the film Gadjo Dilo - the arrival of a young Gadjos (i.e. non-Rom) in a Roma village in Romania looking for a missing singer. Touching and refreshing at the same time, the film was a great success in France and abroad. The following year, Tony Gatlif takes the now famous pair of Gadjo Dilo, Romain Duris and Rona Hartner, this time for the freedom-fighting film Je suis né d’une cigogne. Vengo (2000) describes the rivalry between two Andalucian families. It enabled Gatlif for the first time to work with one of the greatest flamenco dancers Antonio Canales. Swing (2002) was filmed in eastern France, and describes the encounter of Max, a young boy who wants to learn Django Reinhardt’s guitar playing. Exile, again with Romain Duris in the leading role, (2004) Tony Gatlif’s 14th Feature film. Exile celebrated its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as Gatlif won for 'best director.'

EL CHOCOLATE GENIO GITANO

Latin Grammy 2002 award winner Antonio Núñez Montoya, 'El Chocolate,' was born in Jerez de la Frontera (Spain) in May of 1940, but his artistic birth took place in Seville, at the Alameda de Hercules, his cradle and school of singing. The Pavones, Vallejo, El Sevillano, and many others were his teachers and from their living voices he learned the deepest secrets of flamenco music.

These eminent professors of the “Seville university of Flamenco” imparted their masterful classes throughout the first half of the 20th century. Those were the years in which performers sang for sane flamenco aficionados, for fun-seeking drunkards with money, for country folk that went to the theater with desires of having a good time and for other artists with whom they shared moments of pain and joy.

And so, with that interior baggage, Antonio Núñez developed his own artistic personality that makes him noteworthy and unique.

He is the heir to the most classical of flamenco schools, where truths were exposed with all crudeness and where elaborate excess was clearly denounced. 'El Chocolate' doesn't understand half colors in Flamenco, just like he doesn't understand relief and embellishments. Body and soul have to join to find oneself in the gut, to find the feelings, undress them and introduce them to the exterior as an expressive vehicle. As he says: “The soul of flamenco doesn't come, it is necessary to look for it.”

El chocolate won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Flamenco Album in 2002. He preserved and added to the legacy passed onto him by the great masters like Manuel Torre and Manolo Caracol and he was one of the last old traditional voices of flamenco. In July 2005 El Chocolate was due to perform at the 40th Caracol Festival de Flamenco in Lebrija, but he had to cancel due to ailing health; one week later he died of cancer at his home in Seville on 20th July.

Ahora Farruco tiene todas sus esperanzas puestas en un nieto a quien llaman también Farruquito. En espectáculos familiares, en cine (la película Flamenco de Carlos Saura), en el docudrama de televisión Bodas de gloria, se ha corporeizado de diversas maneras la ceremonia en que el abuelo traspasa al nieto sus poderes en el baile. Farruquito es realmente una promesa deslumbrante, pero quien haya visto al patriarca nunca podrá olvidar la portentosa, y vigorosa, personalidad de este auténtico monstruo del baile flamenco.
El Farruco fue el primero de una dinastía mítica de bailaores. Ya en vida estuvo considerado entre sus contemporáneos como el patriarca del baile gitano, además de serlo de su propia familia, siempre preocupado por mantener las costumbres gitanas. Su fama y su escuela no se han extinguido tras su muerte (1997), sino que su danza sigue siendo espejo de la fuerza, el temperamento y el genio gitanos más genuinos.

Antonio Gómez de los Reyes, A.K.A. Antonio Canales, was born in Seville in 1961, at the Corral de Saramaya, a tablao (flamenco club) located at 76 Castilla Street, in the Triana quarter. His was a family of flamenco artists, and it seems that his grandfather, Canales, was a great cantaor (flamenco singer), though he never sang as a professional.

He presented himself to the Lope de Vega Theatre, for a casting for the Ballet Nacional de España (Spain's National Ballet), and was selected. Soon, he was a soloist in this company, and started to guest-star in other artists shows. In 1981, for instance, he collaborated with the Paris based Maguy Marin Company, first step of a long international run, that has paired him with such outstanding artists as Rudolf Nureyev, Maya Plisetskaya, Carla Fracci, Vladimir Vasilev, Fernando Bujones, Peter Schaufuss, Sylvie Guillem, Patrick Dupond and Julio Bocca.

In 1999 he was awarded with the Andalusia Medal, an honour given to those artists that have helped to extend the name of their homeland around the world. The Ballet Flamenco de Antonio Canales Company has represented, among other works, A ti, Carmen Amaya; Siempre flamenco; Bengues, Venus y Narciso; A cuerda y tacón; Gitano; Variaciones sobre el Guernica de Picasso; La casa de Bernarda Alba and Raíces.

MIGUEL PEÑA VARGAS, cantaor y bailaor gitano, más conocido artísticamente por MIGUEL EL FUNI, nació en Lebrija (Sevilla) en el año de 1939, heredando de su familia el arte y el duende del cante y el baile flamenco. Es de una familia gitana legendariaa la que pertenecen figuras como Juan Peña "El Lebrijano", Pedro Bacán, Fernanda y Bernarda de Utrera...Empezó a cantar en su propia casa, pero hasta la edad de 27 años no empezó a hacerlo profesionalmente. ~ 'El Funi" is one of flamenco's lesser known vocalists and dancers. Funi was featured on the 1989 multi-artist compilation, Cante Flamenco, singing two songs -- "Solea" and "Bulerias" -- accompanied by Guitarists Paco and Juan Del Gastor.

Pedro Bacán (Pedro Peña Peña) was born in Lebrija, Seville, in 1951, and like most gypsies from this part of Andalucía, flamenco was a natural ingredient in the process of growing up. He was born into one of the most illustrious flamenco clans of the last two centuries. He is the great grandson of the legendary singer El Pinini, son of cantaor, Bastian Bacán, and nephew of La Perrata, another heavy weight singer from the land of pottery and flamenco. His sister just happens to be Inés Bacán, one of the most relevant singers of the deep ancient styles of Lebrija.

One of my favorite documentaries... ever, "Poligono Sur" (El Arte de las Tres Mil)!
"Polígono Sur" (El Arte de las Tres Mil) es un intenso viaje al barrio más problemático y con más arte de Sevilla, donde se funden los gitanos antiguos de Triana con las nuevas generaciones de artistas. Como en un insólito crisol, este documental busca las raíces del llamado "nuevo flamenco" entre la tradición, lo más puro, y las tendencias musicales más vanguardistas. In 2001 she joined María Pagés’s company, choreographing one of the numbers in the production titled “Las Cuatro Estaciones” (The Four Seasons), touring throughout Italy, Japan, Canada and The United States, where she took part in the Andalusian Gala at the New York City Center.

In 2003 she again took part in the USA Flamenco Festival, performing as a soloist, together with Manuela Carrasco and Chocolate, and forming a duo with Israel Galván.

Rocío Molina’s latest creation is titled “Almario”. It was premiered at the Villamarta Theatre during the Jerez Festival and was directed by Miguel Serrano. Manuela Carrasco was born in Triana, Seville, in 1958, and from her early childhood displayed a natural instinct for flamenco dance. She was born into a family of gypsy flamenco artistes, her father José Carrasco, El Sordo, was an excellent dancer and Manuela learned the rudiments of the “baile flamenco” from simply being surrounded by the flamenco scene of Triana. Her career began in the “tablao” El Jaleo, in Torremolinos and she went on to work in many more flamenco establishments including, Los Gallos in Seville, and Los Canasteros in Madrid. At the age of thirteen Manuela Carrasco undertook a two-year tour of Europe (against the wishes of her parents) with the flamenco company of Curro Velez, and from then on her career snowballed.

But it was not only in Spain that she was recognized as one of the truly great flamenco dancers as she was also awarded the International Dance Prize in San Remo, Italy in 1976. In this same year she was part of a show named Gitano, in which she appeared along side Cameron de la Isla, Pansiquito, and El Lebrijano. Manuela Carrasco was one of the principle figures on the festival circuit in the 1970’s and 80’s, appearing at the Potaje Gitano and the Festival de la Puebla de Cazalla. In fact most of the festival stages in Andalucía have been blessed with her impeccable style and natural gracía.

Paco Cepero was born on March 6, 1942 in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz Province). At the age of 16 he made his debut as a professional in the Grand Theatre Falla in Cadiz. In 1963 he arrived in Madrid and started work in the tablao "Los Canasteros" (owned by Manolo Caracol). Evidence of his status as Flamenco Guitarist are the numerous awards he has won throughout his career; Premio Nacional de Jerez in 1975, Premio Nacional de Córdoba in 1977 and Castillete de la Unión, in addition to the Yunque Oro of the city of Ceuta, the prize Melchor de Marchena Accompaniment and Cabal Silver Circle of Fine Arts for the year 1999. Paco Cepero has played and recorded with figures of incomparable singing including Manolo Caracol, Camaron de la Isla, Tio Borrico,Terremoto, El Lebrijano and El Turronero.

“Quiero pronunciar tu nombre” is the title of a new recording by Juan José Villar Jiménez ‘Juan Villar’ (Cádiz, 1947) which has just been released coming in under the wire of 2004, a year in which, sadly, flamenco recordings did not abound. Villar came of age in the middle of the era of Antonio Mairena and festivals when Camarón de la Isla and Paco de Lucía, obligatory references, were blowing the dust off traditional flamenco with fresh sounds born of deep roots. From that generation of innovators formed in the most classic tradition comes this man from Cádiz with his rich, and very flamenco voice, and a sense of compás you’d expect from his birthplace. His career began at the age of seven with the group “Los Chavillos Gaditanos”, and in the early seventies he was hired by the Cádiz tablao La Cueva del Pájaro Azul along with Rancapino and Pepa de Utrera, where he was able to hone his skills at singing for dance. He went on to become one of the most sought-after singers in this capacity, and recitals at peñas and festivals as well as international tours fleshed out his ample curriculum. Es imposible hablar del flamenco sin hablar de Jerez. Y al hablar de Jerez no se puede ignorar dos constantes que conforman la vida flamenca de esta localidad: las familias y los barrios. Para los no jerezanos a menudo nos cuesta comprender la importancia de esta tradición jerárquica, y mucho menos, qué representa en términos concretos. Aquí el documental define y describe las identidades de los principales barrios flamencos de Jerez, Santiago y San Miguel, y aporta una perspectiva histórica que nos ayuda a desenredar la madeja sociocultural.

It is impossible to talk about without talking about Jerez flamenco. And speaking of Jerez we can not ignore two constants that make flamenco life in this town: families and neighborhoods. For non Jerezanos it is hard to understand the importance of this hierarchical tradition, much less what it represents in concrete terms. Esta relación del flamenco con Cataluña, no se circunscribe solamente al ámbito de una presencia artística más o menos relevante, en la que el trasiego de destacadas figuras del arte andaluz ha sido una constante. Conviene además tener muy en cuenta, la vasta aportación para el flamenco de nombres ilustres con origen de contrastada catalanidad, que han dejado su impronta y su memoria artística para la historia del arte andaluz: Miguel Borrull y su numerosa familia, o la considerada como mejor bailaora de todos los tiempos, la gitana del Somorrostro Carmen Amaya, son sólo una somera muestra.

Cataluña es un enclave principal del flamenco. Que cuenta además con una idiosincrasia propia que le singulariza y le caracteriza, tanto en lo estético como en lo artístico, y que estos hechos diferenciales son proyectados al firmamento flamenco por una constelación de artistas que en su día fueron una incógnita, pero que por mor del talento que les cobija han pasado a ser una palpitante realidad. Francisca Méndez Garrido, 'La Paquera' was born in Calle Cerro Fuerte, Jerez, in 1934, and spent the last half of the twentieth century at the center of flamenco activity. She became a kind of matriarch of the flamenco of Jerez de la Frontera and spent many years performing in the tablaos of Madrid and Seville. She was born in the neighborhood of San Miguel in Jerez, but it was in Madrid were she was to make her name, rubbing shoulders with the top artistes of the time.

In 1971 she was awarded the Niña de los Peines trophy at the Cordoba Nacional Concurso de Cante Flamenco. She is one of the most majestic singers to come out of Jerez de la Frontera in the last century and she gained the title of Queen of the buleriás. She was like a volcano waiting to erupt, her soleares and bulerias were performed with fire and deep emotion and her tientos and fandangos executed with that indefinable art of the gypsies of Jerez. Although La Paquera was a cuchichi or half gypsy, she possessed that quality that the gypsies seem to be able to inject into their flamenco, a colourful, exciting flow of rhythm and heart rending song. As a child she would perform the festero styles of Cádiz in the streets of Jerez, which she learnt from artists like her cousin Diego Rubichi.

This is an incredible documentary about photographer, editor Jacques Leonard and his exquisite gitana wife Rosario Amaya, prima de Carmen Amaya. La historia de Jacques Leonard (París 1909-L'Escala 1995), un hijo de la burguesía parisina, un hombre que dejó testimonio escrito y fotográfico de su vida y de su tiempo, un tiempo de transformación y de cambio, recordado por sus hijos Santiago y Alex a lo largo de la película, y guardado en un improvisado y descatalogado archivo fotográfico en casa del mayor de ellos. Jacques Leonard, pasó su infancia y adolescencia en París, y en su juventud emprendió un viaje en el que recorrió Europa y llegó hasta Australia, pasando por la India. A su regreso a Francia trabajó en el cine como montador y ayudante de dirección en unas cuarenta películas.

Niño Jero es el nombre artístico de Pedro Carrasco Romero. Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), 1954. Guitarrista. Hijo de "El Jero".

Se inició en las ventas jerezanas, acompañando el cante de El Borrico, Tía Anica La Piriñaca y otros cantaores de su tierra, para pasar después a los festivales andaluces y a diversos elencos artísticos, colaborando en los espectáculos "Macama Jonda" y "La tierra lleva el Compás". En 1980, actuó en el tablao madrileño Los Canasteros y a continuación formó parte del grupo Los Montoyas, con los que actuó en la Cumbre Flamenca de Madrid, en 1986, así como en giras por el extranjero.

José Galván comienza su carrera artística a la edad de 12 años en el concurso de Radio Sevilla ("Escucha usted a sus vecinos"), ganando el concurso y siendo contratado para actuar por Andalucía, con el espectáculo que monta con los ganadores Rafael Santisteban, Pepe la Rosa y Manolo Bara.

En 1962 es contratado para actuar en la feria del campo de Madrid. En 1965 debuta en el famoso tablao flamenco "Cortijo del Guajiro", por el que pasaron todo lo mejor del flamenco de esa época. El representante Rafael Montilla lo contrata para actuar con la compañía de Juanita Reina. Actúa en la compañía de Manolo Escobar.

En 1966, en Sevilla, conoce a la bailaora Eugenia de los Reyes Bermúdez, formando pareja sentimental y artística. Son contratados para inaugurar un hotel en granada. Es contratado por Juan Cortez, dueño y empresario del tablao "Patio Andaluz" (en Sevilla). Es contratado por J. A. Pulpón para actuar en Los Gallos, tablao flamenco de Sevilla. donde actúan Trini España, Antonio Nuñez "El Chocolate", etc.

Gitana nacida en el barrio de Triana que ha recibido la herencia flamenca de una familia de importantes cantaores, guitarristas y bailaores. Dotada de una privilegiada condición para cantar, interpreta distintos y variados estilos. A los dieciséis años se presentó por primera vez como cantaora de un importante espectáculo, "El Amargo" de Mario Maya, y desde entonces ha protagonizado un progreso continuo compartiendo escenarios con artistas como de Paco de Lucía, Camarón de la Isla, Rafael Riqueni o Enrique Morente. Su sentido del compás, su afinación y una voz rica en matices, le permiten abrirse paso tanto por los caminos más tradicionales del flamenco como por otras experiencias cercanas a la fusión y al mestizaje. En 1994 protagonizó, junto a Morente, el espectáculo " A Oscuras". En el año 2000 se presenta en la Bienal de Sevilla con Gerardo Nuñez y la New York Flamenco Reunion (fusión de jazz y flamenco con el batería Marc Miralta y el contrabajista Javier Colina, entre otros).

Manuel de los Santos Pastor, also known as Agujetas (b. Rota, Spain, 1939) is a living legend and one of the most important figures in the history of flamenco. The son of legendary singer El Viejo Agujetas, he worked in his father's blacksmith forge until he went to Madrid as a teenager to sing in the flamenco nightclubs there. He has recorded over 10 albums and appears in Carlos Saura's film Flamenco and in Dominique Abel's documentary Agujetas, Cantaor. He is the father of singers Dolores Agujetas and Antonio Agujetas.
